"Clownin' & Krumpin' in South Central LA"
In the ashes of the flames from the Rodney King affair in Los Angeles South Central a new dance style arose - clowning or krumping - as am alternative to gang life and hustling. The dance, done at a breakneck pace, is performed by youths who paint themselves as clowns. The film follows Tommy the Clown, one of the originators of the dance form, and his crew as they hone their skills or try to out-perform rival crews. The result is some spectacular dance-battles where the anti-violence origin of the form is sometimes compromised. The grinding soundtrack pounds out everything from classic soul to west-coat rap. The director, David LaChapelle, who has worked in advertising and with Andy Warhol, and has produced music videos for Elton John and Moby, has here produced what Rolling Stone Magazine called 'a visual miracle' - that is a definite candidate for the understatement of the year award.
